My father builds furniture, and I design websites. I built his website, and as an extension also designed his logo, business card, brochure, sign, magazine ad, wood branding iron, and whatever else he asked me to construct. I feel pride for the things I have designed for my father, but that pride has come at a price. Doing design work for family is frustrating. A contract bound by the obligations of love, a path always tread carefully, a prison never easily escaped. How to please, how to encourage, how to criticize the direction and wisdom of a client you must live with for the rest of their life? A padrone you must call your father? Designing for family is an uncertain task.
